It has taken me a while to realize something important. I never understood why, when racism reared its head, I stood by quietly and smiled. Racism isn’t funny, nor does it amuse me. In fact, I would very often be overwhelmed by emotion after having been a victim of racism. My mind would run through the possibilities of what I should have said had I been more clever or on the ball.
Today I understand my action. By smiling, and letting racism roll off my back - I win. Racism is purely a form of attention seeking self validation. By saying anything to a racist, the racist is being validated. By taking away the satisfaction that a racist derives from provoking a response, racism and violence are defeated.
Allow them their freedom to say what they like, because I am free to forget what was said. I am free to move on with my life, while racists remain chained by prejudice. I will always win, because I am strong. Because I have the will to live a positive life. Because I know that peace and love are paths for the righteous. And that is the path I will chose to take.
Nothing says peace and love like a smile.
